My Disaster and Emergency Preparedness Shopping List
A lot of people make their living from fear about the future. Uncertainty about climate change, peak oil, and political unrest become yet more excuses for excessive consumption. I want something different. I want to create a sustainable life for myself and my family. We already live simply, so it shouldn’t be that difficult.

I am starting off by listing what I am told I need along with the costs. Once I pick myself off the floor after sticker shock, I am sure I will back off and find a way to need far less.

It’s all here as it hits my personal radar: survival, sustainability, natural disasters, war, post-carbon necessity, climate change, and building local community.

what do I need? type of thing area of concern cost source comments
Post-Petroleum Survival Guide and Cookbook book peak oil ($19.99) New Society Got it as a GIFT
Big bag to carry family 72-hour emergency kit. Backpack or duffle. container emergency $10-$40 Maybe REI (where I’m a lifetime member) or army surplus
Cooler or big duffle with wheels container emergency $30-$50 Local grocery store ought to have something I’m sold on the advantage of wheels
Wind-up or solar flashlight basic tool power down $10-$100 Compare REI with local preparedness store How much flashlight do I need?
Wind-up or solar radio communications power down $30-$90 Compare REI with local preparedness store
TOTAL SO FAR $80-$280

I’m not ignoring this list. I just can’t figure out what to put IN the containers on my list. I have a list. I have many lists. I’ve read books about what to put in containers large and very small. Where do I start if I have a limited budget? I posted the week-by-week list, I ought to know.

Breathe deeply and start with a wind-up flashlight radio. I think I have one left over from Y2K. Wasn’t that a time?
